ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorder is considered to be a set of clinical manifestations that affect the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint and adjacent structures, whose signs symptoms can negatively impact quality life their patients. A population group in which prevalence has increased recent years athletes. The aim present study was conduct an integrative literature review verify disorders athletes, as well factors related predisposition. CONTENTS: searches were performed Medline, LILACS Scielo databases, using descriptors “temporomandibular joint”, “athletic injuries” disease”. Inclusion criteria researches derived from primary data regardless design, target audience athletes addressed presence or muscle dysfunction. Ten studies selected included review. results obtained with analysis these articles showed are subject not only due injuries suffered during competitions, but also associated stress use specific devices for sports practice. CONCLUSION: occurrence common among avoided preventive measures conservative treatments. Dental monitoring essential professionals perform well, preventing treating them when they occur.
